George W. Glennie Memorial Nature Salon

Plagiarism Policy:

Digital photography and the internet have made it very easy to acquire high quality nature images that individuals can pass on as their own.

The following policy has been instituted to prevent this:

  • Images submitted to the Glennie competition must be the sole work of the maker.

  • Club Coordinators from each participating club shall verify that all images are the original work of the maker. A website such as www.tineye.com can be used to see if any image has appeared elsewhere on the web. Another possibility would be to check the metadata file.

  • Prior to finalizing the awards, all winning images will be verified by the Glennie committee to be the maker's, thru the use of reverse image search engines, (Such as www.tineye.com), or another suitable method.

  • If questions are raised about the origin of an image, the Glennie Committee will contact the maker, via the club contact, and request they provide proof that the work is original. Proof can include the following:

    • Original RAW or JPEG image with the attached Metadata or similar imbedded documentation providing at least: the make and model of the camera used to take the image, and the date and time the image was taken.
    • For composite images like HDR's and panoramas, the source images as described above.
    • Original Slide or Negative images for scanned images.
    • Electronic copies will be destroyed upon confirmation, physical media will be returned.
    • If an image cannot be conclusively proved to be the maker's, it will be disqualified, and the next highest scoring image will receive the award.

As the Glennie is a club competition the penalty for submitting plagiarized images will fall both on the club and the maker. The following penalties will be assessed for images determined to be plagiarized:

  • For a first offense, the club will be ineligible for club awards for two years. During this time the club will be allowed to submit an entry, but these entries will only be eligible for individual awards. For a second offense, the club will no longer be allowed to participate in the Glennie.

  • For a first offense, the maker will be ineligible to enter the Glennie, from any club, for two years. For a second offense, the maker will no longer be allowed to participate in the Glennie regardless of club.

  • When the cause of a plagiarized image being submitted is determined to be the club coordinator, rather than the maker, either due to clerical error or conscious submission, the chairman may at his discretion decide to waive the penalty to the maker.

  • All decisions of the sponsoring club (MVCC) shall be final.
