Category Title Score Award Comments
General After Sunset 20
I don't know why you compensated one stop under. It has made this image overly dark and blocked up most of the left lower half.
Going Up River 20
This could have been a dynamic image had the subject been in motion. You do need to straighten your horizon and open up the blocked shadows on the clothes.
Happy Birthday Grandpa 20
A good family keepsake. Great action but the treatment both of the background as well as the foreground is a major distraction.
Pretty Boy 20
there is good interaction between the subjects. Your slow shutter speed has resulted in significant motion blur.
Sunrise In Hana 20
This was obviously a beautiful sunrise, but the dynamic range was more than your camera could handle. This would be the ideal opportunity to experiment with HDR.
Toby 20
Cute pooch. It is suffering from blocked up shadows and very shallow depth of field.
Ceres Wall 21
I'm not sure as to what you are trying to show the viewer. My eyes keep wandering, failing to settle on either the flowers or the wall. Your exposure is good though the light let you down. Try going in tighter into specific areas and simplify your composition.
Fall Rain 21
I find the near black background to be over powering. The fall off in focus is interesting as is the iridescence.
The Roof 21
Good texture in the roof. The image is slightly under exposed. I wish there was a point of interest.
Two Horses and One Mule 21
You saw something you liked and you captured it. Good depth of field and focus. The background is overly bright and a distraction.
A Glimpse Into History 22
I like the idea but would have preferred seeing less of the wall and more of the city. The wall tends to block the eye from entering the image. A greater depth of field and more contrast would have increased the impact.
Autumn Joy 22
Had you visited a week later you may have captured more color and possibly a sky not as bald. But I guess we can't always be at the right place at the right time. As the foreground isn't adding much appeal to the image, I would crop 1/3 from the bottom.
Beach in winter 22
Good depth of field, however, the image lacks impact. Though there is good detail in the foreground, you may consider making this a panel.
Valentines Day 22
Good texture in the petals. The focus where important is good. The bright background tends to detract from the main subject.
church on the hill 23
good view point. The image needs to be opened up a little and straightening the spire would help.
Emma 2 23
Cute portrait of this dog. My eyes keep going to the writing on it's toy. You have good depth of field, but the grasses in the foreground are a distraction. You could crop some at the bottom.
Preparing For Battle 23
Go in tighter. There is a lot going on here that could have been shown had this image been a horizontal eliminating the extraneous foreground.
Deep into the canyon 24
A good shot of this rock climber. I wish you could have captured the face to show some expression.
Eagle 3 24
Good action. This could have probably been in the nature category, unless of course, this has been manipulated. The tree unfortunately competes with the bald eagle.
F22 Raptor 24
Peak of action image. I only wish it had been sharper.
Fall in Vermont 24
A good overall scene. A higher depth of field would have brought clarity in the background. The road provides an excellent leading line, but happens to be the brightest area in the image, thus drawing attention away from the rest.
Miller River in Fall 24
The river creates a good leading line. However the time of day was not the best as the image is very contrasty.
Old Door Latch 24
Marvelous texture. The flat light however, has prevented you from capturing all of the detail. I would go back and capture this with side light as it is a very interesting subject.
Spiral Staircase 24
You have attempted a difficult shot and have handled it well. You have maintained good separation, however, a greater depth of field would have benefited the image.
Storm Waves at Hampton 24
Awesome scene. The image however has a color cast that you could have eliminated.
Working The Lines 24
What a great graphic image. Try converting this into a pure black and white.
Afternoon break 25
very creative. The red oak leaf adds impact. The shadows provide leading lines but are tending to be a distraction. Good detail in the dog's coat.
Diamond In The Rough 25
Very creative. I like the tones and the drama.
Flower 25
Once again, the near black background is not appealing to me. The focus is good. You have captured good detail in the lily.
Hero of the Match 25
The subject matter is ideal for a monochromatic image. The hero is clearly distinguishable.
Juvenile Prepares For Landing 25
An interesting nature story that could be greatly enhanced by cropping 1/3 on top and a quarter on the right. This would take the Sandhill out of dead center.
Teton Vista 25
A well executed landscape where you have maintained information and interest in the foreground, mid ground and back ground.
Balloons at First Light 26
Good composition, detail and color. Your horizon line in the center creates a good balance between subject and reflection.
Beach Fight 26
Instead of using a square format, cropping some on the left would take the primary subject out of dead center. You have captured the intensity on the child's face beautifully. Great action.
Circle Of Life 26
Beautiful interpretation. I wish I could have seen the full thumb, particularly as you have room in the frame.
Georgia OKeefe Tulip 26
You have captured good detail in the whites. I like your composition. A shadow highlight adjustment in the upper left would enhance this image.
Lilly Stamen 26
Excellent composition. Your focus is good as is the exposure.
City Lights 27 HM Good low light capture. Excellent depth of field. A small nit, tone down the bright sky in the center.
Land of the Free 27
Wonderful detail. Good impact. Here the bald eagle being dead center actually adds to the composition.
Upper Antelope Canyon 28 2ND Well executed landscape. Technically an accurate depiction of Antelope.
Alone In The Amphitheater 28 3RD I presume this is an HDR and you have handled it very well. The repeating patterns and alternating colors are graphically impressive.
Family Portrait 28 HM Wonderful exposure. You have captured detail in both the highlights and the shadows and the eyes are nice and sharp.
Riding a December Curl 28 HM Wow. Great capture at peak of action. Excellent detail.
Zakim Lattice 28 HM I love this viewpoint. The graphic is excellent and you have maintained great detail throughout.
Fountain for Man and Beast 29 1st Excellent detail. The near monochromatic presentation has great impact. The image evokes both humor and curiosity. The white on the head of the dog creates the focal point in the image. Had this image been flipped horizontally the fountain would not have blocked visual entry into the image and you would have got another point.
Zebras early Light 29 DIOM Wow.
Manipulated A Family Totem 20
The image sure brings a chuckle but then one misses the requirement for this category, which is manipulation.
Andover Commons IR 20
here again, this image lacks the fundamental requirements as it is presented as an infrared capture.
skewed wing 20
With this image once again, the maker has used a creative software tool which in my opinion does not demonstrate photographic manipulation skills.
Christmas Lights 22
The colors of the trees create the holiday spirit. More detail in the house and background would have improved your score.
Fire Hose 22
I love the complimentary colors, however, the use of the twirl filter does not demonstrate creative skills.
Hannah Falls 22
Unfortunately here, this montage does not give the right visual impact. Her arms look out of place - you could have cropped tighter to eliminate this distraction.
Nashoba Valley 22
The use of a sphereizing filter creates an interesting image but does not demonstrate photo editing manipulation skills.
trees in a watercolor mist 22
Here the watercolor effect is appealing as is the use of the pastel colors.
Dizzy Forest 23
Interesting use of the motion blur tool. Unfortunately the image has minimal visual impact.
Flowing Reflection 23
The dark background adds to the visual impact and creates a nice separation. Your treatment is good.
Williams College At Midnight 23
Good use of blue tones. However, the eye keeps getting drawn to the moon. I am not sure what the image would have looked like had you maintained similar tonality.
Missing Link 24
A decent montage. A little simplification would create a bigger impact.
Pop Art 24
Andy Warhol would have been pleased with your presentation. I would recommend a more painstaking cutout.
surf 0n the rocks 24
A well presented panel. The altered reality is expressive
Catastrophe of the Sea 25 HM Here is a well layered montage. Great color and detail where appropriate. I might have reduced the size of the female subject in relation to the sinking vessels.
Snow Scene 25 HM Beautifully created. I like your edge treatment and the addition of color in the edge background.
Wild Ride 25
Dramatic color. Good depiction of motion. I would have preferred to have seen more of the subjects.
Poor Dave Crab 26 3rd I like you placement in this montage. A little motion blur on the sword would have increased the drama.
Gettysburg Field 28 2nd Great monochromatic effect using greens. Even though this is a manipulated image, it tells a great story. You could have even named it 'blown away' - I was.
Get Out Of The Water 29 1st This is a beautiful rendition using HDR or an HDR-like tool. You could have either eliminated the lightening or made it look more realistic.
Nature Eagle in Flight 20
It's a good flight shot, however your focus missed the eye and head.
Foggy Night 20
The mood is interesting but the foreground tree prevents the viewer from entering the image. Not sure what you want the viewer to focus on.
Red leaves 20
You have an attractive composition. Your primary subject gets lost in natures clutter
Rushing Spring Waters 20
Your image is well composed. The cotton candy effect is good but suffers from over exposure which is typical of slow shutter speeds in such situations.
The Sun That Brief December Day 20
the sun is placed in a perfect power point position. I wish the sky had been more interesting.
Turkey 20
A good portrait. The contrast is excessive and it draws the eye away from your subject.
Waiting Heron 20
In this field you need a strong nature story to score well. The heron is a small percentage of the overall image. You need to open up the exposure.
Where the Garden Went 20
Cute image. There is a haze which is making the entire image appear soft. You could possibly correct this by increasing contrast.
Downey Woodpecker Sunrise 21
Great light on this portrait. A tighter crop would help as the environment dominates.
Silhouette 21
A good attempt at a night silhouette. Your exposure and focus are good. However, I would like to see the tree off center.
Berry n Ice 22
In this field unfortunately, the nature story is not as strong as some of the others. Good color and clarity of the ice is very well handled.
Leaping Sea Gull 22
Good color contrast with the gull and sky. The gulls leaping posture is nice but the image soft.
Morning Dove2 22
Good detail on the dove's feathers - the color of the sky is rather unnatural. Unfortunately you did not have the bets light.
Solitary Tree 22
Interesting image. Unfortunately the bald sky let you down.
Away We Go 23
Good capture of this flush of terns. Your aperture was ideal for the detail you have achieved.
Bison with a Mouthful 2 23
The bison's face has good detail. Unfortunately you cut his legs off.
Gossiping 23
A decent composition - the eye of the elephant on the right is too close to the edge of the frame. The bright background upper center draws the eye away from your primary subjects.
Hampton Sunrise 23
A decent sunrise it has the typical banding problems of digital, There is some fall-off of focus. The image is up against some very stiff competition..
Morning After The Storm 23
You have beautiful light on some of the trees on the left. - the overall scene is pleasing - the use of a polarizer would help bring depth to the image.
Spider 23
The orb weaver has been fairly well handled with a decent out of focus background. The web is mostly sharp, however the legs show over exposure. All this can be easily corrected with editing software.
two roseates on a branch 23
You captured a good story and the 2 roseates have good exposure and focus. Unfortunately the highlights in the water are a major distraction.
Wading Heron 23
Good light. The image is well captured. A shallower depth of field would have eliminated more of the background which is quite dominant.
Yellow Bellied Marmot 23
Your subject is well captured. The excessive rock can be cropped away top and right for greater impact.
Aggression 24
Good nature story of a bull elk. Unfortunately the eye that’s visible is in shadow .
Cry for Food 24
Great capture. My major concern here is that you did not cause any disturbance to this nest as it is fairly evident that this is a close up with the use of flash.
Egret 3 24
Wonderful capture of this Snowy Egret with its catch. The breeding plumage adds to the story. There is a slight loss of detail in the feathers. I would recommend the elimination of the border.
Rainy day lunch 24
This young bull in velvet chewing is a decent nature story - he does look startleled. You a bit over exposed and the image needs some contrast too.
winter morning by the brook 25
The exposure and light are very good. The water provides a nice leading line into the image.
Bee on Daisy 26 hm Excellent macro capture. Good story of pollination. The detail is tremendous.
Early Morning Flight 26 hm What a great shot of a Sandhill in flight. The motion blur in the wings does not bother me as you have maintained excellent focus where it counts.
Elk Call 26 hm Terrific light on this bugling bull elk. I like your composition, crop and the catchlight in his eye.
White Sand 26
good detail throughout the image. I like the composition and the placement of the plant.
Great White 27 3rd A nesting story of this Great Egret in full breeding plumage - you captures the colors really well. I would give this bird a little more room in front as compared to the back.
The Wave 27 hm Very well handled. The warm and cool colors are very effective. Your depth of field, exposure and composition are commendable.
Great Gray Owl 28 2nd Technically very well done - I like the detail as well as the over all balance.
Tree Swallow Feeding Young 29 1st Superb story. You snapped it in the peak of action. Excellent depth of field and you have frozen the subjects very well.
People & Portraiture Curls 20
Here you have more of a graphic than a portrait. The hair dominates the image in its entirety.
Solitude 20
Here your subject is a fraction of the entire image. Your image as a whole is very appealing as an architectural composition.
Tents removal team having fun 21
Great story. The loss of resolution takes away from the impact.
1st Fish 22
Beautiful child. You do need to establish eye contact with your subject.
Native American Heritage 22
Interesting viewpoint, but for this image I would have preferred a more direct shot rather than looking up.
The Gate Keeper 22
Here again the maker has captured this gentleman in his environment. I find that the image is tilted, which you can easily correct.
Cooling Her Heels 23
This is a fun image.try and get down to eye level and create visual contact.
Newborn 23
Beautiful baby. Your exposure unfortunately is one stop over.
Melissa Is Ready To Fight 24
This environmental portrait has great potential. The lighting however, let you down.
Nathan 24
Photographing children is not easy. You have done a good job. The bright white stripes draw the viewers eye away from the child's face.
Young Lady With The Red Hat 24
Though a bit overexposed, the model has good eye contact. Your treatment of the portrait is good. You could definitely eliminate most of the background using a tighter crop.
Baby Kaylyn 25
Lovely image of this newborn. The exposure and detail on the child is excellent.
Say What 25
How do you get them to do this? Take a third off the top and the resulting square format would be very strong.
Stonecutter Designer in Egypt 25
Another very nice environmental portrait. The natural light on the stone can be easily toned down drawing more attention to your subject.
Little Princess 26
As in a previous portrait, avoid mergers with the background. Here the lighting is a little flat.
Cutieface 27 hm Beautiful capture. Your crop however is a little too tight. I would have preferred seeing all of her ear and right hand.
Her Pride 27 hm Another great black and white. The shadow across her lower face is a major distraction.
Jack 28 2nd Another solid portrait. Great detail and great lighting.
Dinner for Two 28 3rd Excellent black and white. Your lighting is well handled. Using a reflector you could have reduced some of the shadows on her neck.
Elizabeth 29 1st If there was no merger of her hair with the background, this would have got a 30.
Photojournalism High Speed Water Slide 15
This is a creative image and I feel that it doesn't fit in this category.
Saturday In The Park 20
You froze the motion of these ribbons. The story is not strong.
The Proposal 20
Had the resolution been better and less pixelated, this would be a great image.
Waiting On Parade 20
Sometimes a little simplification helps. Here you have a lot of information that confuses the viewer.
You Aren't Saying I Have To Get Up Are You 20
One needs a little more of a story for this category.
Proud 21
Good color. You could have presented this image where you had visual contact.
Watch Your Step 21
A well captured image of people on a slippery deck. You need a stronger story.
Bicyclists in Yellowstone 22
Your shutter speed was good. The time of day resulted in some fairly heavy shadows.
Old Vs. New 22
I like the juxtaposition of old vs. new. The white edges are a problem.
Waiting for the Light 22
We can all relate to this. His patience is apparent.
watching the Macys Day Parade 22
Your title tells me what they are looking at but the image does not.
Carving It 23
Great exposure c control. I wish I could have seen the child's eyes.
Pedicure 23
You have a great story here. The image has an excessive tilt, which when corrected, would really enhance the story.
Pull 23
Great action and rhythm.
can we talk 24
Great expression on the child's face. Your composition would be stronger with the elimination of the right side.
Saying Good Bye 24
A strong emotional image. You could adjust your exposure down a bit.
Finishing Touches 25
You tell a good story. Coming in from the front would have been more effect tive.
From The Sky 2 25
The colors have great impact. Your focus is good.
My Brother is Getting Married 25
A good story. Definitely a keeper for the family album.
Pondering His Next Move 25
Life size chess in black and white has great visual appeal. Here the audience adds to the intensity.
Teamwork 25
Good story, composition and I like the overall balance.
Hard At Work 26 hm I don't ever want to be in trouble with these guys around to save me. I love the humor.
On My Tail 26 hm Excellent action. Coming in a little tighter and showing this as a panel would strengthen your story.
Pedroia Interview 26
The smile tells the story of a win.
Ice Storm 27 3rd Excellent story. The tire tracks add a lot to this image.
Health Care Reform Debate Portsmouth N.H. 27 hm You've really captured the essence of Obama's opposition.
His First Train Ride 28 2nd Very nicely done. Showing the train through the window places the child in the environment.
White Water 29 1st You know he's not going to win. The image says it all.
Travel Floating down the River 20
I would like to see more of the river in your image. Probably a tighter crop would help.
Silver Lake VT 20
The left side has reasonable detail, while the right is soft. The horizon is dividing this image into half. This is a good depiction of a Fall scene.
Traveling 20
Unfortunately this image is out of focus and is up against some very strong competition.
View From 8th Deck 20
This is probably a shot from atop a cruise ship. Your resolution jpeg artifacts are excessive.
Wildflowers Among Limestone 20
I wish I had more of a sense of place, this could be anywhere.
Camden Maine 21
You have a good scene that does not need the sky. A higher depth of field would have helped you.
Canyon Overlook 21
You have an interesting sense of place. The noise in the sky is a major distraction.
Lake Street Bridge 21
Even in photo travel be cautious of the technical aspects. Here the image would pop with about a one stop exposure composition.
Reflections Josephine Lake Glacier NP 21
Looks like a beautiful place but you are a stop and a quarter plus exposed.
St Peters Basilica 21
I think the strength of this image is in the Basilica which is diminished by the foreground in your composition.
Sunset At Waikiki 21
A good silhouette. You could have brought out more detail in the clouds which would have enhanced the rest of the image.
Tinsmith 21
A decent composition of a Tinsmiths place of work. It's well composed. I find the window distracting.
Venetian Lamppost 21
An interesting lamppost. Unfortunately it does not give me a sense of place.
Crowded Beaches Of Prince Edward Isle 22
Your title belies what your image portrays. I wish the foreground were more in focus.
Lower Desoto Falls 22
A nice image of a waterfall. Good shutter speed and focus.
Rockport 22
Nice sense of place. Not to sound like a broken record but a whole stop less of exposure gives this image the right punch.
Tending The Fields 22
I wish there was more depth of field. Looks like a beautiful place, but where is this?
Bay Bridge Reflections San Francisco 23
A nice low light capture. Reducing the reflection and making this into a panel makes it a stronger image.
Becker Winery 23
The vineyard could do with some saturation in the sky.
Patriotic Boston Street 23
I am noticing a fair amount of over exposure in travel images as is in this one. One stop less and you would have an image to reckon with.
The Walled City of Jeruselem 23
Here the converse of my earlier comments is true. Adding exposure and increasing the contrast would make this image pop. You have good detail throughout and a strong sense of place.
thermal activity Yellowstone 23
A pleasing composition that is lacking saturation in the thermal pool.
Annisquam 24
Beautiful light. Nice capture of Annisquam. Fit for a cover.
Morning Light 24
The image is great but your title does not tell me where I might be.
Boston Cityscape 25
Very well captured. The horizon is in the middle and the sky does not add to the story. Cropping it corrects the problem.
Beijing Aquacube 26
I'm glad you kept the writing and the Olympic insignia to give your image a sense of place. Great low light capture.
Cog 26
The complimentary colors of the car against the sky enhance the value of this image.
Jenny Farm 27 hm Great sense of place. It invites the viewer to visit it.
Niagara Falls Nights 27 hm Very well done. You have detail in the shadows and a sense of place.
Times Square 27 hm An excellent depiction of Time Square accompanied with its hustle and bustle. Opening up the shadows brings out detail in the foreground.
Rockefeller Center 27
The building and the statue tell you where you are. Well done.
Three Sisters Reflection 28 2nd Well captured and exposed with great detail. It invites you to go there.
Valley of the Kings Keeper A 28 3rd I like the near monochromatic presentation. The image gives one not only a sense of place and attracts you to visit the tomb.
Sunset on Delicate Arch II 29 1st Beautiful light. I like the way you have framed the landscape through delicate arch. Excellent depth of field. Now this image would tempt me to go there.
