Print Rules
The following rules are from the MVCC Constitution & Bylaws:
Appendix B - Monthly Print Competitions (April 2011)
- All members compete on an EQUAL BASIS in all categories.
- Entries will be accepted ONLY from members who have paid their dues for the season.
- Any Image which has already won any award in monthly print, slide or digital competitions in any year, or any image that is remarkably similar to any of these winners, will not be eligible for entry into monthly print competitions.
Award winning prints may be entered in NECCC, PSA, or interclub competitions, subject to the rules of those competitions.
- In the event that there are less than three (3) entries in a category, the judge will assign a point score, but no ribbons will be awarded. The entries may be submitted again during the season to be judged and scored, with a chance to win an award.
- ONE print may be entered in each of the following categories : COLOR GENERAL (C), B&W GENERAL (B), MANIPULATED (M), PEOPLE (P), and ASSIGNED (A).
- B&W GENERAL print category is for straight monochrome or toned prints. One additional color may be added, for example by hand coloring or selective toning.
- BLACK AND WHITE GENERAL prints may be any size print on a 16" x 20" maximum mount. It can be printed by the submitting member or be commercially printed from the member's negative, slide or digital image.
- COLOR GENERAL prints may be any size print on a 16” x 20” maximum mount. It can be printed by the submitting member or be commercially printed from the member’s negative, slide or digital image.
- MANIPULATED is a category open to any size print up to 16" x 20" including mount. The maker may use ANY METHOD to produce the print provided the initial image(s) was captured or recorded using light sensitive material or equipment employing a light sensitive device or detector (camera, scanner...). The use of computer enhancement manipulation is required for eligibility in this category. All
artwork, its components and manipulation must be produced by the maker only. The degree of manipulation must be clearly and distinctly obvious. Judges are advised to evaluate prints in this category on their artistic merits.
- ASSIGNED prints may be any size print on a 16” x 20” maximum mount. They may be Color or Black and White. They can be printed by the submitting member or be commercially printed from the member's negative, slide or digital image.
The List of monthly assigned subjects for the season will be created by the Print Chairperson.
An Assigned category subject may be either singular or plural unless otherwise stated.
An entry will be considered in category only if the Assigned Subject is the DOMINANT feature. At the JUDGE’S discretion, an entry that does not fit into the Assigned Category may be disqualified or given a minimum number of points.
- PEOPLE category is open to any size print up to 16" X 20", including mount. This category is open to human subjects only, focusing on but not limited to an artistic, and/or technical representation of the face and body of a single person or a group of people. Any color rendition and image enhancement is allowed.
- All categories are "open" - there will be no assigned subjects, except for the Assigned category.
- Prints on a wood mount or in a glass frame are DISQUALIFIED.
- Prints must have the category and title on the REVERSE side of the mount. Maker's names will not be on the print. Each maker will be assigned a competition number for the year; this number must be on the back of the print. Labels with areas for title, category (See rule 5 above), and competition number will be provided; these should go on the back of each print, at the bottom right. Failure to comply may result in disqualification.
- Prints may be submitted at any meeting prior to the due date (normally 2 weeks before the competition), or mailed to the Print Chairperson.
- A digital jpg file of each print entered must be uploaded to the MVCC web site before each print is entered. The file size is maximum height 768 pixels by maximum width 1024 pixels. The file name for each file must be :
The competition date - for example, April 21 2010 date is 20100421
The category designation - C, B, M, P or A (See rule 5).
The title of the print [with no spaces or nonstandard characters].
The member's competition number.
Example - if member # 999 enters a color print titled "The Red
Barn" for the April 21, 2010 competition, the filename
will be :
20100421-C-The_Red_Barn-999.jpg
To send in these files, go to the MVCC web site at
www.mvcameraclub.org, then click on "competitions", then on
"prints", then on "uploader". Then upload your files.
Failure to provide a digital file of a submitted print shall result in the rejection of that particulaw print from that monthly print competition. Rejected prints may be resubmitted in future competitions.
- Monthly ribbons will be awarded on the basis of the number of entries in a category, but no more than 50% may be winners: 3 entries - 1 ribbon; 4 or 5 entries - 2 ribbons; 6 or 7 entries - 3 ribbons; 8 to 14 - 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 1 H.M. (Honorable Mention) ribbons; 15 to 24 entries - 2 H.M.s; 25 to 34 entries - 3 H.M.'s, etc.
- Each entry will be scored on a 6 to 30 point scale by the judge.
- The print with the highest score will be the print of the month. (POM). If there is a tie at the highest score, the judge will select the POM from these tied scores. Then, in each category the 1st place, 2nd place, 3rd place and HM's will be based on their scores. The judge will break ties in each category, if neccesary.
- A running tally of each competitor's point total will be maintained. Year-end awards shall be given, category by category, based on the sum of the top six (6) scores. A First Place Plaque, a Second Place Ribbon, and a Third Place Ribbon shall be presented for each category.
- All prints which have won Print-of-the-Month, 1st, 2nd, 3rd or HM during the season are eligible to enter the Print-of-the-Year Competition, except that each member may not enter more than 2 HM's in any category. A Print-of-the Year Plaque, and 2nd and 3rd place Rosette type ribbons, shall be awarded.
Appendix C - Awards (March 2011)
Annual awards will be presented at the banquet for :
- A plaque for highest total point score in each Print category for
regular club competitions, and ribbons for 2nd and 3rd place, in
accordance with Appendix B section 20.
- A plaque for Print Of The Year, chosen from only Print-of-the-month,
1st, 2nd, 3rd and selected H.M. winning prints from the year's
monthly competitions.
- A plaque for highest total point score in each Digital category for
regular club competitions, and ribbons for 2nd and 3rd place, in
accordance with Appendix A section 4-I.
- A plaque for Digital Image of the year chosen from only Digital
image-of-the- month, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and selected H.M. winning digital
images from the year's monthly competitions.
