"I feed wild turkeys most of the year so they've come
to expect seeds to be ready for them when they visit my backyard.
When the other birds clean them up first or I'm late putting
them out, the turkeys get a bit "anxious" and will
walk over to my basement window and, if they see the light
on, peck the glass with their beak until I notice them. My
computer room is in the basement and there's no way to ignore
the constant tapping.
The day before I got this shot I washed the window to make
sure there'd be nothing on it to "confuse" my autofocus.
The camera used was a Kodak DX6490, focal length 380mm, f:4.0,
at a distance of 8 feet, camera on a tripod beside the washing
machine. I used the self timer while holding one hand up and
wiggling my fingers to hold his attention. It was 8 above zero
at the time and the turkey has a bit of snow clinging to the
underside of his beak. I think this photo has a great deal
of appeal due to the "ugly factor". The wrinkly
skin and googly eyes make a startling portrait. There aren't
many turkey photos taken from this close and with the camera
right at ground level."
