Rules
for Submitting Prints to Gallery Shows
Updated May 28, 2007
(View list of shows.)
A. Prints
- Quality is the main requirement. We want prints which will
appeal to the general public and, hopefully, encourage viewers
to pick up a camera themselves and enroll in the club.
- Prints should be identified on the back with the title and
the member's name. We also require you to complete
the submission form for each print. This form is available
on the club's website. Please ensure that the name on the print
matches the name on the form. That is how we will tie them together.
- Members interested in selling their prints should state the
prices on the website form. We request that members donate 20%
of their gross to the club. Some of the galleries that display
our prints request donations based upon sales. This is usually
another 15%. (Typically galleries require 40-50% of any sale,
so this is a good deal.) Remember, if you
plan to sell prints of people who can be recognized, you will
most likely need a model release. You do not need a release
to show the print.
- Members must sign a waiver form indemnifying the club and
the galleries from any liabilities related to each print they
show.
- Prints must be technically good and not crude or offensive.
If a print is found lacking, or has technical problems, e.g.,
color casts, scratches, etc., the submitter must rework the print
and resubmit it.
- The Gallery Committee reserves the right to withhold any
print it considers unsuitable for the audience at a particular
show.
B. Mounting
- To avoid Newton rings and other problems, glossy, semi-glossy
and similar papers will have to be recessed in their mounts
so that the prints are not pressing against the glass. Matte
prints do not have that problem and can be surface mounted or
simply inserted in the frame without mounts.
C. Frames
- To achieve a uniform look, all prints should be submitted
in the same style black frames resembling the "MCS MULTIPURPOSE"
frames used by most participants. These are available at
many arts and craft and photography stores. The price for a
16" x 20" frame is approximately $10 at A. C. Moore
in Salem, NH. They frequently go on sale at 40% off, dropping
the price to $6. They come in a variety of colors and finishes.
For the shows, they should be black. If you elect to use another type of frame,
then the exposed, front surface of the frame should be plain, black and approximately 3/8"
wide.
- Front mounting frames such as the "Format" frames
are not acceptable. We have had problems with the glass falling
out.
- All prints should be framed in 16” x 20” frames. This does not mean that the prints
themselves must be large. We would point out that small prints can be elegantly presented
in large frames.
- The glass in newly purchased frames is rarely clean. Dust
and grime shows up in gallery lights, particularly when there
is a black background. Please be sure to clean both sides of
the glass when framing the prints.
- Occasionally, despite careful handling, some glass does get
broken. We do all we can to avoid this, but some damage is unavoidable.
The club is not responsible for replacing broken frames.
