Patterns and the Unexpected
Add an element of surprise to your photo

Sometimes repeating patterns are good. And sometimes breaking that pattern can make for interesting results. Consider various options as you compose your photos, and be aware of your surroundings.

For example, while 'pumpkin picking', the photographer liked the repeating pattern of similar sized pumpkins. Nearby was a basket of gourds of various sizes, shapes and colors. The photograper decided to experiment.

    1. The first image shows a repeating pattern of similar sized pumpkins.

    2. Introducing a gourd with a similar shape, yet different color changes the photograph.

    3. Adding a larger gourd with an irregular shape changes the photograph again.

Be adventurous and experiment! You're the best judge of what is most pleasing to your eye.
